About the publication

Thomas Hirschhorn’s (b.1957, Switzerland) immersive installation It’s Burning Everywhere was commissioned by Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2009. It has now been recreated for the Kunsthalle Mannheim in 2011.

“It's Burning Everywhere is one of the most complex and challenging gallery experiences I've had in recent years and I can't think of a single thing that has comes close to its impact in Scotland. It has both brought out the roaring philistine in me and convinced me that in times of crisis, the arts can deliver where the news media has failed.

With substantial illustrations from the installation at Dundee Contemporary Arts, this publication brilliantly conveys the immensity of the show. It enables one to absorb something of the experience of actually being in the gallery surrounded by an all-consuming cardboard forest, overflowing pyres of mannequins, fluorescent lighting and brides draped in images of thousands of small fires.

Edited by Ulrike Lorenz, Director Kunsthalle Mannheim. With contributions an introduction by Judith Winter, Head of Arts Programme, Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) and essays by Graham Domke, Exhibitions Curator, DCA; David Joselit, Carnegie Professor, Yale University, Department of the History of Art and Stefanie Müller, Curator of Kunsthalle Mannheim.

Produced in collaboration with Kunsthalle Mannheim. Published by Kunsthalle Mannheim and Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg Berlin in English and German.
