About the edition

This print was created by Clare Woods and produced in DCA Print Studio as part of 2020 Editions: a portfolio of prints created to mark an extraordinary, challenging year, and to support DCA's recovery from a crisis that has gripped the entire cultural sector.

As the UK-wide lockdown that began in March 2020 drew to a close, we invited a group of artists who had participated in our programme to submit work to be developed with our team in DCA Print Studio and included in a portfolio. Some had worked with us recently; others had taken part in projects soon after we opened in 1999, but all of them gave their time and work generously in support of DCA, and we are incredibly grateful to them.

The project came with some built-in specifications – shape, size, edition number – but the remarkable diversity of the finished works eloquently reflects the range of our programme, and the possibilities of working with our Print Studio.

I made a litho in the DCA Print Studio during my solo show, Victim of Geography in 2017. The litho was of a young Captain Scott and it was titled The Optimist. For this project I wanted to use the image of Scott’s tent as is was discovered by the Norwegian explorer Tryggve Gran. When Gran and his team discovered the bodies of Scott, Wilson and Birdie in the tent Gran referred to Captain Scott as the ‘The Owner'. Clare Woods

About Clare Woods

Clare Woods lives and works in Hereford. Her work is held in many major international collections including the Arts Council England Collection, the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, USA.  

Recent solo exhibitions include Buchmann Galerie, Berlin, Simon Lee Gallery in London, New York and Hong Kong, Martin Asbeak Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark, Mead Gallery, University of Warwick, Coventry and a permanent public commission for the London 2012 Olympic Park. Her solo exhibition at DCA in 2017 was titled Victim of Geography. She is represented by Simon Lee Gallery, London.
