Rachel Eulena Williams

About the edition

This limited edition print was produced in DCA Print Studio by New York-based artist Rachel Eulena Williams in addition to her exhibition, Hair and Body, which showed in DCA Galleries from Sat 26 August to Sun 19 November 2023. This exhibition debuted a new body of work expanding upon Williams’s exuberant use of colour, her radical approach to materials and the playfulness and vitality of her practice.

Williams works in an intuitive and improvisational way: first creating the work, and through this seeking meaning and reference points. Tensions embedded within the work emphasise its sense of motion and energy – between readability and abstraction; flatness and sculpture; deconstruction and being held back together.

Fundamental to the artist’s practice is a rejection of Western art history’s preconceived notions of colour as ‘other’ – unruly, foreign, and vulgar. Colour has also often been associated with the feminine, which is further explored by Williams through the flower motifs which appear across her canvases.

For this work, Williams used the compositional elements that appear in her paintings, such as stitched and painted canvas, flower motifs and rope. Drawing directly onto the silkscreen with wax, she took rubbings of her canvas shapes and textures. Then, by cutting up the resulting screenprinted imagery and introducing paper pulp casting, she created this final composition.
