About the edition

GOODBYE (deinos sauros) references a number of key themes within Lauren Gault’s exhibition bone stone voice alone: the figure of Echo in history and within landscape, and materials with a relationship to voice, agriculture and deep time.

This edition features a collage of two historical works. The background image is from a Bernard Picart etching depicting the mythological character of Echo in a cave at the point of her transformation from figure into sound. The overlaid image is taken from a 19th century woodcut, by an unknown artist, depicting Clach na Bratach, a Scottish crystal charmstone believed to have had animal healing and clairvoyant properties. Here, the shape is manipulated into that of a cabochon, a traditional oval gem cut, whose name is derived from the French for head or face. Subtly suggesting the reappearance of Echo in bodily form, Gault positions her as an observational figure gazing out from amidst a changing landscape.

The overprinted text refers to the word dinosaur, made from a Latinised form of the Greek words deinos (terrible) and sauros (lizard). The text exists as an ominous prompt, referencing the disappearance of beings and figures from our land, or their transformation within it.

Gault developed an experimental printing technique during a residency at DCA Print Studio where sculptural ideas and techniques were applied to printmaking processes. Stone slurry, a byproduct from the stonecutting which produced the stone in Gault’s exhibition, was screenprinted across the edition, linking contemporary printing to the deep history of our landscape.

The typefaces used in this work have been chosen for their associations with agricultural mineral lick branding. They also provide a link back to Echo’s bodily resting place, with the use of a style of font known as a grotesque, which is derived from the Italian grottesca, meaning ‘of a cave’.
