About the edition
This limited edition, interactive print was created in DCA Print Studio as part of Ingrid Pollard's residency as she prepared work for the DCA exhibition Soft Impressions.
Soft Impressions was a major cross-generational exhibition which included new and existing print work from Pollard, Helen Cammock and Camara Taylor. The exhibition engaged with printmaking’s role in the historic distribution of ideas about race and depictions of otherness, and its use as a tool for both political activism and propaganda.
As part of the exhibition, Pollard created new work in DCA Print Studio which looked at themes of repetition. The screenprint Bruised, 2024, and the hand-screenprinted wallpaper work Sometimes, 2024, both looked at how repeated behaviours can be negative, such as in abusive relationships.
She continued the theme of repetition for this limited edition print, focusing instead on music and movement. The image of the drummer is taken from a broadside ballard, which were narrative songs or poems printed on single sheets of cheap paper, sold on the streets, and sung publicly. Incorporating movement design by the Print Studio team, the print can be brought to life by pulling a tab at the bottom. This causes the drummer to bang his drum and stamp his foot.
Please note that this work can only be handled delicately and is not intended for children.
