About the edition

We are pleased to announce the launch of Emily Floyd's screenprint Abstract Labour produced during her residency at Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio in summer 2013 for the project Below another sky, commissioned by the Scottish Print Network.

Continuing her interest in collective forms of work and play, Emily Floyd began her residency at DCA Print Studio researching peculiarly Scottish examples of organized work and collective endeavour. She visited Robert Owen's utopian industrial village New Lanark and The Colonies of Edinburgh to see the working class housing projects built during the 1800s by The Model Dwelling Companies. Working with printmaker Scott Hudson, Emily produced the technically complex graphic screen print Abstract Labour, employing five different colour separations.

Named after the Marxist concept of abstractly representing working time, the title of the print is spelled using simple shapes familiar to kindergarten pedagogy and modernist typography. Returning to Australia, Emily began work on a series of lithographs inhabited by ideas of cooperation and participation encountered during her time in Scotland. For the current major survey of her work at Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne she has presented a new sculptural installation based on Abstract Labour.

Floyd produces work in both print -primarily lithographs- and sculpture. Many of her recent sculptural pieces refer to the simple, geometrical forms and primary colours common to children's building blocks. In a recent profile on the artist's work published in frieze, Wes Hill noted that Floyd, 'explores the history of pedagogical play in her work, employing it as a frame for investigations into design, typography, protest, public art and the legacy of Modernism'.
