About the edition

The title of Duncan Marquiss’s exhibition Copying Errors refers to biological variations caused by errors in the reproduction of genetic information, yet it is also a reference to Marquiss’ preoccupation with the idiosyncrasies that occur within the materials he uses. Working with DCA Print Studio Marquiss’ continued his interest in the relationship between natural evolution and human behaviour using enlarged images of jay feathers as a starting point.

Considering the notion of biology as a science of information, one that is concerned with how information changes through reproduction, Marquiss' choice of screen printing is also linked to his subject. It is a print process that copies and transfers an image composed of discrete units of information through the mesh of the screen. Yet as each print in these editions is handmade, every copy is open to variation and human error.
